7:00 Important Sale of
Bonsai
Our long-time
member Tom Refvem has decided it's time to turn his
attention to other things and is selling his
collection of approximately 100 bonsai, some in
bonsai pots, others in training boxes. He offers
these trees for purchase by Kusamura members. Tom
and the Plantings have priced the trees, which will
be sold on a first come, first served basis at the
February meeting. The sale will begin at 7:00 p.m.
sharp and last till 8:00 p.m. This is a great
opportunity to acquire some nicely developed bonsai
with sizeable trunks and age. Don't miss this
sale.

Grafting Workshop
Due to illness,
Tim Kong will be unable to tell us about urban
collecting this month. Instead, in response to
members' requests, Lonnie McCormick will give a
lecture-demonstration on scion grafting, root
grafting, and thread grafting. Afterwards, he will
help members who wish to try grafting themselves.
Preferably, workshop participants should bring all
their own materials. Plant material for scion
grafting is a two- or three-year-old seedling (for
the understock) and a snippet of last year's growth
containing several dormant buds of a different
cultivar of the same species (for the scion). You
will also need a sharp grafting knife, single edge
razor or Exacto knife, grafting tape or raffia, and
sealants.
Lonnie will bring
a few scions of ume and Sandy a few plum seedlings for
understock for use by those who have no materials
of their own. Trident maples are good candidates
for root grafting. A seedling can be used to
improve the rootage of a bigger plant that lacks a
root in a desired place. For thread grafting, you
will need a developed tree (maples are often used)
with a long whip of last year's growth that can be
made to reach a spot on the trunk where a new
branch is needed.
