EXTRA! EXTRA!

Free Bonsai Lessons!

February's meeting is a chance to take free bonsai lessons from the experts in your club! There were a number of junipers and other plant materials donated to the club last year. These plants will be part of our annual show plant sale. It is nice mature material and will work up into really exceptional bonsai. One of these junipers will be included in the benefit drawing.

We will work on styling of these trees during the meeting workshop and you can either pot them at home or attend the potting party on Sunday, February 13th. Bring tools if you have them. Wire and pots will be provided. You will take these plants home and care for them until show time. If you fall in love with the plant, you may purchase the plant at the club meeting or later when you bring them to the plant sale. I had to buy the ones I styled last year. All of these junipers have to go home with club members. Pauline and Duncan have kept these plants for us over the last year. They are moving to a location where they will not be able to store this material. We thank them for their contribution.

This "potting party" workshop was planned so that those club members unable to attend any of the three Sunday functions could a) get assistance in styling trees for the plant sale and b) style at least one of the club-provided trees.

Book Sale

Kusamura Bonsai Club would like to announce a sale of wonderful old bonsai books and magazines.

We have some rare books, several first editions, a few signed.

All were donated by former members Joe Clepp, Tom Refvem and Pete and Amy Sugawara. This sale is raising funds for our club.

March Meeting

Will feature a two-part meeting by Jim Gremel. There will be a lecture-demonstration on bending cedars and a workshop session for those who have one of Jim's Yamadori style trees. He will show next steps. Jim will also have pots and wire for sale.

Potting Parties

These events are very important to the welfare of your club. This is how we pay for our annual show and for programs at the club meetings. As you know, membership dues are kept low as one requirement of membership is the donation of three trees to the annual show plant sale (minimum value of $25). Another requirement is styling of club-provided trees. Perhaps you're unaware that if you can't attend any of the potting parties, you should be picking up at least three club trees (more if you can do so) to style on your own. The advantage of attending the potting parties is that all the materials -- trees, wire, pots, soil, etc, -- and assistance from more advanced members is there.

There was good attendance at the first potting party of 2005. The Board would like to thank those that gave up a Sunday to join our enthusiastic group. We styled about 30 plants. For those of you who haven't yet been to a potting party, you have missed the best chicken drumsticks in the bay area prepared for us by Marge Iseke. Ed Poggensee hauled all the used soil away, Lonnie McCormick provided us with fresh soil, and Stephanie North took an inventory of available pots and placed a new order. We had first time new members attend, Thanh Pan and Doan Ngo. Set up by: Lonnie McCormick, Ed Poggensee, and Stephanie North. Clean up was done by: Dave & Rita Curbow Jane Iki Bob Jensen Lonnie McCormick Stephanie North Ed Poggensee. Lets see some fresh faces fro the next potting party.

The Plantings were gracious as usual in allowing us to us to use their facility. I hesitate to call it a garage, as it is so much more.

The next potting party will be at the Plantings on Sunday, February 13th, from 10 am to 4 pm. My birthday is the following day. I will provide birthday goodies for all those of us born under the sign of Aquarius. We especially need help with set-up (9:30am) and cleanup at this potting party as John Planting will be recovering from surgery for removal of kidney stone and unable to do his usual 110 percent of all the prep/cleanup work.

The last potting party is March 13, 2005.

Anyone who participates in a club potting party gets a raffle ticket for each attendance. At the April meeting there will be a special drawing for this prize.
