NEXT MEETING -- July 12, 2002

7:00 p.m. Kathy Shaner

Kathy Shaner, just back from her annual trip to assist her teacher, Yasuo Mitsuya at his nursery in Japan, will give us a "summer demonstration." For those new to Kusamura, Kathy is the only woman and the only foreigner to have earned a certificate to teach from the leading bonsai association in Japan. She is curator of the GSBF-Collection North in Oakland, and gives bonsai programs to groups and conventions all over the country. Currently she is co-chairperson of the GSBF convention to be held this October in Sacramento. Kathy is a great artist and teacher, and everyone will enjoy and profit from her presentation.

8:00 p.m. Workshop

This part of the program is a workshop: each member is invited to bring a problem tree to the meeting for Kathy to critique. Then, the owners will work on their trees following Kathy's advice. Participants will, therefore, need to bring tools, wire, and a large plastic bag or other table protection. No repotting will be done. What a great way to learn from Kathy and one another this meeting will be!

July Work Schedule
From A Year of Bonsai Tips by Jim Ransohoff

August Bus Trip

The August meeting will be a bus tour to the Santa Rosa area on Saturday, August 24, 2002. We will stop at Sumigawa's Nursery and growing grounds and attend the show of the Redwood Empire Bonsai Society. Kathy Shaner will give a demonstration while we are there. The large exhibit will be beautiful and inspirational. Plants, pots, wire, tools, books&emdash;everything you could want&emdash;will be offered by the many vendors at the show. Members of the host club will have trees for sale also. Mark your calendars now. Travel in comfort and have access to the huge baggage compartment on the bus, which can accommodate big trees and lots of them. The bus trip will cost $30. Prepare to sign up at the July meeting.

Monthly Workshop Opportunities
For Kusamura Members Only

Once you've completed the beginners' series of bonsai workshops, what's next? Kusamura offers its members a great opportunity to continue refining their skills in a series of limited-enrollment, more advanced workshops. For the most part, each workshop meets once a month. Because space is limited, participants must apply in advance for a place. Information on how to apply will be supplied at the club meeting.

The following workshop dates and times have been scheduled for July:

  • Thursday, July 11 (7:30 p.m.) Kathy Shaner
  • Saturday, July 13 (1:00 p.m.) Sandy Planting
  • Thursday, July 18 (7:30 p.m.) Sandy Planting
  • Saturday, July 20 (1:00 p.m.) Sandy Planting
  • Thursday, July 25 (7:30 p.m.) Sandy Planting
  • Friday, July 26 (1:00 p.m.) Sandy Planting

(Note: Sandy Planting's workshop dates are the second and third Saturday afternoons, the third and fourth Thursday nights, and the fourth Friday afternoon of each month. A calendar of future workshop dates will appear each month in the newsletter.)

Kusamura Bonsai Show News

News Flash! We will be moving our bonsai show this year to De Anza College. It will be held during the third weekend in April, the same time as the Cherry Blossom Festival at the Oaks Shopping Center, which is across the street from the college. Good news: Sandy Planting will be our show chairperson. Much more later.
