NEXT MEETING -- July9, 2004

8:00-10p.m. Black Pine Workshop

This month's meeting will be hands on workshop from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will be no beginner's workshop. Try to be prompt so we can have an early start to get the most from the black pine workshop.

Lonnie McCormick will help us do and understand the tasks that can be done in July to improve the quality of your pine trees. His concentration and study of pines with Kathy Shaner gives him a knowledge base just full of information.

Some of the techniques covered will be removal of this year's growth to promote bud back and reduced needle size for next year.

Please come prepared with a black pine you would like to refine, your tools, and a table cover to gather the debris you might create during the workshop.

Last Month's Azalea Workshop

Jim Ransohoff brought in many examples of azaleas to demonstrate the newer and plant care as taught by Mr. Gondo. I have included the handout from that workshop in this newsletter. I think you will find it quite informative.

I noticed we still do many of the same things we did before, but the timing is all different.

Interesting how several soil mixes are recognized as suitable for azaleas. These are included in the handout.

From The Show Chair

I have agreed to be show chair for your 2005 show. We will still use the De Anza site using our past experiences to refine using this space. Bang Vo has agreed to take on the task of signage chairman for the show. He worked to improve the signage last year and knows where there could be further improvements. Thanks Bang.

I know many times our best trees do not do their best at show time. I would like you to consider twice the number of trees you usually show and start working on them now. This should give you a choice of spectacular trees at show time. There will still be room for that plant which decided to bloom unexpectedly. Consider plants also for the in progress room and the stumps.

The layout will be similar to the 2004 show. Keep in mind it will be a combination of Tokonoma Style as well as tables with running displays. We will have two Shohin areas.

I am looking for volunteers to chair various usual parts of the show, like Kitchen, Hospitality, and Plant Sales. I am also looking at fresh ideas that might increase attendance at the show. If you have ideas, please let me know.

I think the earlier we start, the better and easier things will become.

An Invitation from our Friends in Hawai

For the last four or five years a group of our Bonsai Friends from Hawaii have turned out in force to support our annual GSBF Conventions. Now we can return the favor.

The Hawaii Bonsai Association will have a Bonsai Show in Honolulu, Hawaii on Saturday and Sunday August 21 and 22, 2004. What a great reason to visit Hawaii!

Bonsai Master Yasuo Mitsuya will be the headliner and there will demonstrations, workshops, exhibits by the members from the different clubs in Oahu and an exhibit critique. For registration information contact Kathy Ebey, 808-488-0743; hbabonsaiohana@yahoo.com.

If you are unable to attend we are encouraging support from GSBF clubs and individuals by making a contribution to their raffle. Donations of items or checks can be sent to Keith Schultz, 205 Kaha Street, Kailua, Hawaii 96734, and made payable to Hawaii Bonsai Association.

Let's support our friends like they have supported GSBF!

Thanks!

Mel Ikeda
