Potting and Repotting. This is your last chance to repot conifers or nonfruiting deciduous trees before winter sets in. Do not do major root pruning when repotting at this time: better wait for spring to do this. Wiring. This is the last month to wire conifers and non-fruiting deciduous trees. Remember: don't wire too tightly. Fertilizing. This is an important time for plants to store nutrients, but do not overfeed with nitrogen. This will be your last feeding with the mix of cottonseed meal, bone meal, and blood meal (9-3-1) or Miracle Gro (Miracid for azaleas and camellias). After this, feed monthly with 0-10-10 to provide rootage and woodiness. Watering. While the weather normally cools off at this time of year, keep a watchful eye on your plants and do not let them dry out. If possible, scratch the soil surface and if it's dry beneath, water. If not, leave the plant alone, as you don't want to drive all the oxygen from the soil. Get Those Bugs! Clean up your benches and under your pots. It you haven't checked lately, it's likely that you will find several bugs trying to get at your plants. To prevent over-wintering of aphids and other chewing and sucking insects, spray with Malathion or Sevin&emdash;use a sticker. For scale control, use Volk Oil or any systemic spray. Check the label on the Volk Oil before using, as not all plants can handle it. For fungus, which you will recognize as dark spots on leaves or a white powdery substance on the undersides of leaves or at the base of needles, spray with Benomyl (weak solution) or another copper-based spray.
