Bonsai, meaning a tray planting, was introduced into The United States by the Japanese immigrants of the early 1900's, and the culture of this art has since reached many corners of the world. It is believed Bonsai had its origins in China about 1500 years ago and in finding its way to Japan some 700 years later, became the practice of the priests and the nobility of the era. The Japanese people in admiring the natural beauty of their land, placed great value on nature and developed Bonsai into the classic art form we see today. In Bonsai-making, one studies the picturesque trees growing in nature's own environments and following these details, we create an effect which gives us an illusion of a tree or a mountain scenery on a miniature scale. There are variations in the styling of a Bonsai and with one's creative ability can result in the start of a masterpiece in a few short years. Bonsai are developed from the common garden varieties of trees and shrubs and not a dwarf species of their own. In getting started in this hobby, select a plant that has potential to meet your style requirements. The branches are wired to the desired shape and the foliage is trimmed to get the effect much like a sculptor designing a statue. During dormancy the roots are pruned and the tree is planted in a tray harmonizing with the style and characteristics of the tree. Once established your Bonsai becomes a living picture that changes with the seasons. Bonsai require the same environmental needs as any outdoor trees, but because of their shallow container they must be watered daily. An interesting hobby for both young and old, your achievements become more rewarding each year. |
