Each
year the FBS repots trees that have been grown out from liner stock. The
junipers that are being repotted today are about 4 years old.
The site used for our repotting
day was set up with all the things we would need to mass produce about
40 junipers into acceptable bonsai to sell at our annual show. Tables
and chairs were provided and the soil components were ready to be mixed
together to make the soil that would be used for repotting each tree.
Plastic pots of the appropriate size were provided, as was the
wire.
The first order of business was to
get the soil mixed together that would provide ample drainage along with
the moisture retention to get the plant thru the long hot summers of the
central valley. The soil mix is basically one large sack of super soil
mixed to one bag of washed and screened sand. This mixture with its
granular texture, along with the moisture holding properties of the
super soil will work fine.
The soil components were dumped on
the floor of the garage and mixed together with some shovels. After thoroughly
mixing the components, it was placed back in the tub for easy access by
all.
The plants were brought from the
growing area, and numbered about 100 in all. We were only preparing 40
for the show. The rest will be used as teaching stock, or saved for next
year.

| All
those plants sitting in the driveway looks like a daunting task , but
with all the help on hand today it should go pretty easy. On hand for
the activity today were , Al Keppler, Joe Kobe, John Roehl, Ray Thieme,
Harold Mitchell, Clint Cummins, Larry Rodriguez, Robert Iseman, Ben
Douglas, Bill Case, Marie Torigian, Bruce Young, and Buford Goncheroff.
Each person grabs some stock to
work on. The trees are pruned for shape, wired and then repotted in the
plastic bonsai containers. It is pretty interesting to see what some of
these plants look like after the 15 minute styling job.
These tree will provide the club
with revenue for the next year and is an essential part of the club
process. The trees turned out pretty good. Some examples of the finished
trees are below. A very productive day for the club, thanks to the
membership.
