Our 41st Annual Show

Our annual show is scheduled for April 21 and 22 at Mitchell Park Community Center in Palo Alto with Kathy Shaner and . More Details.

April Meeting

Ah, Spring at last! Most of our trees with new leaves and possibly lingering flowers are at their best. It is time for Kusamura's annual bonsai show on April 21st and 22nd at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto. The show affords us a chance to perfect a few of our best trees and view them in a formal setting, away from the crowded conditions that exist in most growing areas. Learning to show our trees on stands of an appropriate size and form, and to use some combination of companion plants, suiseki, and scrolls with them is a technique as important to learn as wiring, pruning, or potting. The first value of our show, then, is personal: to enjoy and appreciate our trees and those of our friends more fully.

A second value of the show is to enchant visitors and encourage others to adopt our fascinating hobby. Needless to say, the lunchroom is a wonderful place to entertain our friends and become better acquainted.

The entire April program is designed to help us prepare for what we expect will be our best show yet.

Accent Plants with Sandy Planting

7:00

Sandy Planting will discuss accent plants and how to groom them and our trees for the show.

8:00

Sandy will help us practice setting up tokonoma or formal displays using the bonsai we expect to show. In the past, although a few members planned their displays ahead of time, most of the arranging was done in a rush on Saturday morning. This time, all members will have a chance to prepare their own exhibits in advance.

Here's how it works. Remember that everyone is expected to display three of his or her best trees in the show. For the April meeting, members should bring two of the three in order to learn or practice how to arrange formal displays. Bring any stands, companion plants, suiseki, or scrolls that you think might complement your trees. Please bring extra items in these categories that others could use or borrow. (Make sure to mark with your name everything that you bring.) A backdrop will be set up with a table on each side. Members will take turns perfecting their displays. Sandy will make suggestions, and others are invited to ask questions and make comments as we go along. It is hoped that those members who have only recently-styled trees will participate in the meeting and display their trees formally in the in-progress room at the show.

This meeting will be fun, but it won't be a total success unless everyone participates and learns the essential skill of display.

Show and Tell

Because of the nature of the meeting, there will be no show and tell this month.

Sign-up Sheets

Look for show sign-up sheets at the meeting. Members are asked to volunteer for various tasks associated with the show: working in the kitchen, hosting the show or greeting visitors, helping with setting up and taking down the show. Those who work hard to clean up after the show will be eligible for a strike (special drawing). The prizes will be six nice pots and four good quality plants.

Notes for the Show

Friday, April 20th, starting at 7:00 p.m. Members deliver their three donation trees to the Mitchell Park Community Center, where the plants will be priced. Members will be able to buy plants that have been priced. Good quality ceramic bonsai pots may be substituted for donation trees. Fifteen dollars may be paid to the club for each missing tree or pot.

Also on Friday night, in order to save time on Saturday morning, members are asked to help assemble backdrops for the show.

Saturday, April 21st, starting at 8:00 a.m. Members deliver their three show trees and other items for their displays and help to set up the show. Please read Jim Ransohoff's tips for April (below), especially the section entitled "Main Effort," about how to get your trees ready to display.

Special Workshop on April 7. For those who wish additional help to prepare their trees for the show or advice on their tokonoma style exhibits, Sandy Planting is holding a workshop on April 7th at her garage in Menlo Park, starting at 1:00 p.m.
