Traditionally Kusamura has a holiday potluck party in December where the members bring whatever they want that will serve 6 to 8 people and Kusamura buys a ham and turkey roll. Somehow it all works out. The club also usually buys or gets a donation of at least 3 nice bonsai items as special door prizes.
This year, in order to have a place big enough to hold our families and friends, I have been persuaded to rent the Lanai room at the Palo Alto Elk’s Club. This room is on the right hand side of the building and is towards the back. There is a door to the Lanai room off the parking lot, so access is easy. The Elk’s Club is located at 4249 El Camino, Palo Alto, just south of Charleston/Arastradero, between Rickey’s Hyatt.and Trader Vic’s. (see map in next column)

Lonnie McCormick is
bringing the ham and turkey and Jane Iki is doing the table decorations.
The club will also provide a bowl of punch.
Food should be brought ready to serve as there are no kitchen facilities at the Elks Lodge. The club will provide paper plates and plastic eating utensils. If you prefer a real plate, you may bring your own.
I’m selling a very nice cork oak as a door prize and we have a large trunk juniper bonsai donation. The other door prize is a large pot from Nancy Eaton.
We can have wine at the Elks Club, but they charge an $8.00 corkage fee per bottle. So if any member wants to have wine they should be prepared to pay the corkage fee.
We are trying to rent St Mark’s church for our monthly meetings, but nothing is finalized yet. The date will be changed to the third Friday as St Mark’s is used by the Regency Dance Group on second Friday’s. I will be meeting with the office staff on this Friday to get the rest of the paper work going.
January’s program will be on rock plantings. Saikei and all other types of rock plantings.

Duncan Minalga has a client in Palo Alto with an old wisteria that has a lot of very large suckers. Duncan has worked back these suckers so that there is growth low down on the 2” to 3” diameter trunks.
Time and
date of the dig to be determined, after
leaf fall, probably January. Call Duncan at
