John Thompson - Oak Workshop

John Thompson was our guest for the evening workshop. He worked on a collected California Live Oak.

The demo oak was collected 10 years or more ago and boxed by the late Tom Refvem who was a 40 year member and past president. It was donated by his wife Janet.

The California Live Oak prior to styling had been contained in this box for more than 10 years.

"J.T." discusses the trees possibilities.

The Oak show signs of weakness on one side.

Checking for root systems while assistant, Lonnie
McCormick removes the top portion of the box.

John works to find the front and to reveal the tree with the correct angle.

Removing the top of the tree and finding the new apex

The new front is marked with chop sticks and limb
shorting and trimming begins.

Wiring the new apex after 'exercising' the limbs.

Wiring continues to create the new top.

Limbs are marked for future cuts. Depending on the
strength of the roots these may be left on to feed the tree.
