John Thompson - Oak Workshop

Shaping of the cut is done with a carving tool.

The carving of this area removes and shapes the main
cut. John is also able to see the health of the tree and
indicates that a wood hardening treatment will be
needed. He also seals the cambium layer to protect
from disease.

Now the serious root work begins.

John and Lonnie turn the tree over and place it in a jig
that John Thompson has created. The jig allows for
the use of both hands to work on the root system.

Soil is removed and large roots are cut to create a flat surface.

A detailed view of the roots show a very clean base with
major roots pruned out.

John places the Oak into the pot for the first time to check for fit and look for roots that may need further trimming.

A large root is trimmed to allow proper placement.

Soil is added. Soil mixture contains a great deal of coarse material for draining and a small amount of ground coconut hull as organic material.

Chop sticks are used to help hold down the root
system protect them from the anchor wires.

Soil is tamped down and flattened.

Almost done. John talks about future development of
the tree and notes the trimming of the marked braches
in future years once the tree becomes stable.

The finished tree, 3 hours later, shows great
promise and will be a great treasure for the
raffle winner.

And the winner is a new member to our club. We will continue to give her advice on the care and styling
of this wonderful California Live Oak styled by John Thompson. We also welcome her to our club family.
What a way to start!
