This Month A Special

A field trip to Maruyama’s Nursery is planned for January 2008. The nursery is located in Sacramento and also has a large selection of pots and supplies. The date of the trip is Saturday, January 19, 2008.  We will carpool to Maruyama’s and be departing from the Planting’s residence at 8AM.

We need a list of people willing to drive and a list of those who will be passengers.  Please contact John Planting at the January meeting.

John Planting with Marco in 2006
Happy New Year and it is time to make some resolutions. One primary resolution is to prepare trees NOW for the upcoming show in April. Many of our trees have set for some time and need to be cleaned up, repotted, and groomed for the show. It is best to start early on that work and wire and clean up those trees now. It will make show day much easier and more enjoyable.

I hope you have a great Bonsai year.

Beginning Classes

A previous first year tree; this  was a mass of growth with no movement in the trunk. Continued work on a first year tree is rewarding and great training.
Kusamura offers beginner-level classes to all those looking to gain the basic skills of style, wiring, potting, and caretaking. Classes are offered at the Planting residence for a small fee covering expenses. Completing the beginner level classes is required before you can take advanced workshops. Classes will begin in late January and run for 6 sessions. Class content can cover group planting, rock planting, formal/informal upright design, cascade design, soil preparation, and wiring techniques.  It is not only instructional but loads of fun; a time to meet members and finesse the beauty from our tress.

Beginner classes will be held on Saturday morning starting at 9AM until Noon.

If you are interested in taking the class, please contact Sandy Planting to sign up and get a schedule of classes and requirements.

Update From the Kusamura Bonsai Show Chair
I am now soliciting volunteers to help with the show. I am preparing a list of roles and responsibilities that need to be filled as well as a task plan for future shows. Please see me, Jerry Carpenter, if you would like a particular role. I will be starting signup sheets in January.

This year the show will return to Mitchell Park, located at 3800 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, CA 94303.  The show date will be April 26-27 with a setup day on April 25.

Newsletter and Web Pictures
This year I would like to solicit pictures of trees in your collections. Each month I would like to post a picture of a member’s tree with a brief tag line under it speaking about the tree. You can submit your pictures to me via email at jcsf1090@earthlink.net or bring me a photo I can scan. Submit your name and tree information at that time. Let’s show our talent to each other.

Tree of the Month

This member tree is a standard Japanese Maple. It's been under training for 11 years. It was bought as a starter bonsai at the Midori Club show in 1997.
