Your Club, Your Activities, Your Show, Needs Your Participation
By Jerry Carpenter

I know that recently we have not been having a great turnout at meetings and finding volunteers has been difficult. There may be many reasons for this. I would like to hear from you about what we can do to raise attendance and create a cooperative spirit of volunteerism for your club. You might consider this a rally call.

All clubs are what their members make of them. People are the club. People of all sorts with many different talents and interests are our heart of the organization. We all bring our energy to the living art of bonsai. It is what we have in common and it is what we put some energy behind. The living art we create brings us joy and peace and the knowledge of an art well done at show time.

The board of directors would like to hear from you about how to make Kusamura thrive. I am willing to accept email or hear your concerns and suggestions in confidence, if that need be, and I will summarize the finding for the board. Please communicate via phone, email, or face to face with a member of the board you are comfortable with and share your concerns and ideas.

We need ideas on how to attract new members, show our trees in venues around the area to bring interest to the club, and how to advertise in cost effective manner to bring new interest to our art.

Collection North Adopt a Tree project
The Collection North located at lovely Lake Merritt has created a new program for adopting trees by clubs that will help pay of the specific maintenance of that tree or trees. Adoption amounts are determined by the care needed for the tree and the general starting fee is $500 per tree. Kusamura’s board is considering adopting two of Tosh Saburomaru’s  (Kusamura’s founding Sensei) trees that are at the garden and could be adopted (an oak and a mugho pine) costing the club $1,000.  The Board feels this is a good idea, but is struggling with how to gather the funding.  The funds can come from individuals or from a fundraising event. The board of director’s would like to solicit your ideas on how to collect the funds for this cause.

Volunteers from Kusamura help support the Collection North by volunteering; assisting the garden by being a docent or with landscape and/or plant care. Jerry has recently taken on the creation of the Collection Newsletter and will start creating the quarterly publication in 2008. Stephanie, Lonnie, Helen, Hap, and John have found that being a volunteer over the years at the Collection North is a very rewarding time of caring for great trees, giving information to the many visitors who are always curious about how bonsai are created, and the chance to learn many new skills from the other volunteers and from Curator, Kathy Shaner.

Something New for Club Members!
Do you have a problem tree, a bug, a styling or species question? Please send your questions to jcsf1090@earthlink.net and we will research your question for a new column in the newsletter. Pictures of the problem always support it better. We look forward to your challenges.

Meetings, News and Special Events

Nov 16, 2007 MEETING
Demonstration and Workshop 7:00–9:30 Tree Workshop
Jim Gremel is conducting a demonstration of yamadori juniper.  Members can purchase from Jim stock to create their own yamadori style juniper. In the second part, members who have created their own yamadori trees will have time to get help on refinement and ideas about taking them to the next stage during the workshop. Jim will also have pots, wire and some small trees for sale at the event.

Show and Tell will feature your fall examples and yamadori styles trees you may have worked on in the past.

Refreshments
The following members are requested to bring refreshments to the November meeting: Dennis Abler and Ricardo Archila. Please find a substitute if you cannot contribute.

Library will be open.

News
December Holiday Party
We need a volunteer to help coordinate the festivities. Please contact a board member if you would like to help. We need a primary organizer.

From the Kusamura Bonsai Show Chair
I am now soliciting volunteers to help with the show. My first request is to see how many people are going to show trees this year. Stephanie North will be doing publicity this year and I appreciate her assistance. Please see me, Jerry Carpenter, if you would like a particular role. I will be starting signup sheets in January.

This year the show will return to Mitchell Park, located at 3800 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, CA 94303.  The show date will be April 26-27 with a setup day on April 25.

Newsletter and Web Pictures
This year I would like to solicit pictures of trees in your collections. Each month I would like to post a picture of a member’s tree with a brief tag line under it speaking about the tree. You can submit your pictures to me via email at jcsf1090@earthlink.net or bring me a photo I can scan. Submit your name and tree information at that time. Let’s show our talent to each other.

Tree of the Month

Shimpaku Juniper. This tree has been trained for several years. It was purchased at an estate sale of a bonsai collector in the south bay two years ago. It has been wired for almost a year and will undergo some major changes in the coming year. It is probably a bit more than 5 years old.
