Fall Repotting (Excerpt)

by Brent Walston

(I am rerunning this article due to its relevance to fall repotting. click the link below)
Introduction

Fall is a good opportunity for repotting. I have been an advocate for fall repotting in mild areas (zone 8 and warmer) for many years. However, there are some pitfalls. In this article the physiological state of the plant and the environmental factors in autumn are discussed so you can decide if fall repotting is for you.

The Advantages of Fall Repotting

There are some really good reasons for fall planting and repotting. The most important is that transpirational stresses are reduced. Fall is a time of falling air temperatures but residual warm soil (earth) temperatures. Deciduous plants will be pretty much done with their leaves so transpirational losses are minimal. Evergreens will still have active leaves, but the activity is reduced due to cooler temperatures and shorter days (lower light intensity).

News

A Docent at the Northern Collection
Having spent a few days at the collection I highly recommend we volunteer to help at the Garden as individuals and as a group. The social experience of meeting and greeting interested folks from around the world is rewarding. Then, getting the opportunity to work on the wonderful trees under the direction of a curator or Kathy Shaner is the wonderful benefit.

Many clubs schedule and gather for a day work at the garden pulling weeds and doing required chores. This is an excellent way to bond with our club members and to provide some labor for the Collection.

If you are interested in car pooling up to Oakland to work in the garden please contact a board member. We want to schedule a work day there and have a car pool put together for the event.

Also, if you would like to talk to those who help at the Collection speak to Lonnie McCormick, Stephanie North, Helen Reist, Hap Thompson, John Planting or Jerry Carpenter. We are actively giving one day a month to the Collection.

Newsletter and Web Pictures
I would like this year to solicit pictures of trees in your collections. Each month I would like to post a picture of a member’s tree with a brief tag line under it speaking about the tree. You can submit your pictures to me via email at jcsf1090@earthlink.net or bring me a photo I can scan. Submit your name and tree information at that time. Let’s show our talent to each other.

Programming Suggestions
The Board is soliciting members’ ideas for programs for the coming year. Please see a board member to express your ideas for workshops.

Show Chair
We are looking for a Show Chair this year and now as for a candidate to accept the position for the ’08 show. The position needs to be assigned so that booking and design steps can be taken soon. Please contact John Planting if you are interest this month.

Tree of the Month

Olive, Originally purchased at the Kusamura Bonsai show plant sale in 2005. Owned and restyled by Jerry Carpenter with the help of Sandy Planting at various workshop sessions. The Olive is believed to be 15 + years old. Tree exhibits a ‘wasp waist’ but the branching has developed over the years and will continue to be refined. I took formal photos of all my collection against a white display panel to record development and to exclusively show the structure of the tree.

Tree is 18” tall and 19” wide.
