Peter Sugawara
With the
passing of Peter Sugawara on March 10, 2003, the bonsai
community lost a dear and supportive friend and mentor.
Elected in 1961 as Kusamura's first president, he was always
an enthusiastic member and benefactor. In 1954 he
established the Monte Bello Nursery in Los Altos, CA which
he operated until his retirement in 1980. In addition to the
usual fare, the nursery carried rare and unusual, plants,
many of which Pete propagated himself.. Monte Bello was
often mentioned as a prime source in Sunset Magazine. Fine
bonsai were displayed at the nursery, and Pete stocked all
the plants that were desired by bonsai hobbyists. Pete was
often on hand to give advice and to promote Kusamura
membership. The nursery was among the first to carry fine
Japanese bonsai pots. These were sold in the Monte Bello
gift shop presided over by his second wife, Amy, who
predeceased him in 2000. (The first Mrs. Sugawara, Kiyo, and
the mother of his four children, had died in 1968.) Pete and
Amy were also at the founding meeting of GSBF to which he
bequeathed his entire collection of bonsai, pots, and tools.
Several of his bonsai are on display at GSBF Collection
North. Our condolences to the family.

Jutta McCormick
Our hearts go
out to Lonnie Mc Cormick, our present president for the loss
of his wife, Jutta. She wasn't a bonsai person, but she
encouraged Lonnie in his dedication to the art. Her passion
was long distance running. Our condolences also are sent to
Kurt and Ben McCormick, who were Kusamura members when they
were boys, and to their families.
