August Roadtrip

We will not have our usual meeting this month. Instead the club is sponsoring a bus trip to the Santa Rosa area on Sunday, August 26th. Details in the Calendar section below.

A Message from Our New President

Lonnie McCormick, the club's new President for 2001-2002, wishes -- as do all Kusamura members -- to thank Sandy Planting for her excellent leadership of the club during the past years. He also wishes to commend the help given Sandy by the Board and all the members. He will do his best to lead the club during his term, and hopes that he can rely on everyone'support.

Calendar

August 26th: The bus will visit (1) Sumagawa's Nursery, (2) Sumagawa's Growing Grounds, (3) Redwood Empire Show. The bus will leave the Plantings' home in Menlo Park promptly at 8:00 a.m., and will return at about 6:00 p.m. The cost of the bus is $30.00 per person. Spouses or friends may buy tickets. Pay in advance at the July meeting by cash or check (see our treasurer, Rita Curbow). Bring a lunch including plenty of liquid. No water will be available at the growing grounds.
Bring a hat -- it will be hot.

You may be asking, "Why should I go on this trip? This is a rare opportunity to shop for almost anything connected with bonsai. The Sumagawa Nursery has lots of interesting plants. The growing grounds is a place to hunt for specimens of many common and unusual species. Some have been in cans for years and have girth, curves, and interesting features not available in the stock of most nurseries. Furthermore, you can only visit the growing grounds as a member of a group, not on your own.

The Redwood Empire Show is a very large one. You will see many very fine trees displayed tokonoma style. There will be many vendors there selling plants, pots, tools, wire, and everything else bonsai people desire. Redwood Empire members also sell big plants on consignment. There will also be a demonstration by Mas Imazumi. To see some photos of trees on exhibit last year, click here.

Why take the bus? It's a very pleasant, hassle-free, air-conditioned ride. You can visit with friends and enjoy the scenery. The baggage compartment is huge, and can accommodate big trees and lots of them. Those that have taken the bus ride before will attest that it is worth every cent of the fare.
