SPECIAL!
Please note:
There will be no second Friday meeting at the
church this month. Instead, the club is sponsoring
a bus trip to the Santa Rosa Area on Saturday,
August 24th. The bus will visit (1) Sumigawa's
Nursery, (2) Sumigawa's growing grounds, and (3)
Redwood Empire Bonsai Show and Sale. The bus will
leave John and Sandy Planting's home promptly at
8:00 a.m., and will return at 6:00 p.m. Please park
your cars in the vacant lot just behind the
Plantings' house.
The cost of the
trip is $30.00. Spouses and other friends are
welcome to buy tickets. If you did not reserve a
place at the July meeting, you may do so by
contacting our treasurer, Rita Curbow. You may pay
upon boarding the bus, but please make a
reservation to assure that you are not left
behind.
Bring a bag lunch
and plenty of liquid. No water will be available at
the growing grounds. It will probably be hot, so
dress accordingly and bring a hat.
The trip is a
rare opportunity to shop for almost anything
connected with bonsai. The Sumigawa Nursery has
lots of interesting plants. The growing grounds is
a place to hunt for specimens of many common and
unusual species. Some have been in cans for years
and have girth, curves, and interesting features
not available in the stock of most nurseries.
Remember, you can only visit the growing grounds as
a member of a group, not on your own.
The Redwood
Empire Show is an extensive one. You will see many
very fine trees displayed tokonoma style. There
will be many vendors there selling plants, pots,
tools, wire, and everything else bonsai people
desire. Redwood Empire members will have large
plants and pots for sale on consignment. There will
be a demonstration by Kathy Shaner that you won't
want to miss. At Kusamura members' request, we are
going to the show on Saturday this year instead of
Sunday in hopes of having a better selection of
items to buy.
The bus provides
a very pleasant, hassle-free, air-conditioned ride.
You can visit with friends and enjoy the scenery.
The baggage compartment is huge, and can
accommodate big trees and lots of them. After an
action-filled day, you will enjoy not having to
drive home. Those that have taken the bus ride
before will attest that it is worth every cent of
the fare.
Tom Refvem

Hunger Project and Habitat for Humanity. A longtime
member and past president of Kusamura, he was
elected an Honorary Life Member for his service to
the club and to bonsai generally, including his
serving as the lead carpenter on the Gloria
Clementson Docent House in the bonsai garden at
Lake Merritt in Oakland.
There will be a
memorial service for Tom on Saturday, August 10,
2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Woodside Priory Chapel,
