Potting Parties
In November only 8 long-term members showed up for the potting party held at the Planting’s in Menlo Park. Since it has been awhile for some and the first time for the new members to hear of these events and the reasons we take the time and effort to orchestrate them, we have decided to spend some time talking about the events so that the January 14 and February 11, 2007 events will be successful.

First, what are potting parties? They are just too much fun, a bit of work, and even some treats. They are full days set aside wherein the club provides pots, soil, wire, and the space to repot trees of various types. Ok, so why are we repotting these trees? We are repotting trees that are either new (initial potting and training), held over from previous Kusamura shows, donated trees (trees given to the club from collections or personal gifts), club purchased (stock), and going to be sold at the show to benefit the operations of Kusamura Bonsai Club.

Potting parties are an excellent time for newer members to attend and learn necessary skills such as wiring, soil mixtures, root care, and styling in a group setting free of charge. We ask only for your time, patience and effort.  Speaking for my personal experience of attending I must say that I learned how to wire during this event. Crazy me, I brought a 5 trunk Quince with lots of limbs and I spent the day learning from Sandy how to wire. Every time I did something wrong she and other were there to lend a hand and teach me how to do it correctly. It was an irreplaceable event in my first year of membership and I know it will continue to be a wonderful communal learning experience.

As a member of Kusamura you are to donate three trees each year to the club for sale at the show. Potting parties are great opportunities to bring your trees help work on the club trees because all the supplies you need are provided by the club. These trees are to be taken home to be care for as well. The end result of all members bringing those three trees is that the club makes money during the annual show to help support guest speakers at the meetings, guest bonsai workshop presenters like Marco Invernizzi this past fall, and John Thompson this Spring along with a show presenter in April and events like the bus trip.

Meetings, News and Special Events

December 15, 2006 MEETING

Christmas/ Holiday Party

There will be no Show & Tell, raffle, and the library will not be open. See bellow.

News
We are asking for members to inventory the trees they are taking care of for the club. Please let us know if you have trees, the count and the basic types of trees you are caring for. Please let Bill Scott know as soon as possible.

We are looking for an alternate location to maintain our club storage shed. If you have space in your yard please let John Planting know.  We may either be building new one or a moving the old shed.

2007 Kusamura Bonsai Show
This year will mark the show's return to Mitchell Park, a long standing home of the club show.  The show date will be April 28-29, 2007.  Stay tuned for news about member roles in producing the show. Thoi Nguyen and Sandy Planting will be show Co-Chairs.

Potting Parties
Mark your calendar for the following potting party dates: January 14, 2007, and February 11, 2007.  Potting parties run from 10 am to 4 pm.  Members are asked to each bring trees for styling as a donation to the club.

Christmas Party

The Christmas/Holiday party will be held at St. Mark’s this year where we have are regular meetings. Jane Iki has volunteered to be the event coordinator. The club will be providing a ham and turkey for the event.

We will be having a gift exchange. Please bring a gift with a value of $10-$20. Wondering what to bring? In the past member have given bonsai pots, supplies, Japanese art, or just be creative (we all love to get those nice little packages). The club will also be offering three special items that can we won with a raffle ticket that you will be given when you arrive.
