Group Plantings with Ruben Guzman

7:00

Sandy Planting will discuss how to trim and prune deciduous trees. You may bring plants about which you need advice.

8:00

Group planting is the topic for this month, and Ruben Guzman is our presenter. His demonstration will use Liquidamber trees and the finished product will be raffled. Ruben comes from Danville and has been active in bonsai for many years. He has given GSBF Convention and Shohin Seminar programs and lectures at bonsai clubs all over California. We will learn a lot from Ruben about how to assemble saplings into a peaceful forest scene.

Show and Tell

Many plants are leafing out early. Fresh, tender leaves are always a delight to behold. Then there are flowering trees in bloom. How about sharing the splendor in your yard by bringing a tree or two to the display table? Your reward: a free benefit drawing ticket.

Calendar

February 11, and March 11. Kusamura will hold three Potting Parties in preparation for our annual show. Meet at the Planting's house. Time: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or until all plants have been transformed into bonsai. Plan to stay a few hours of your choice.

Q: Why do we have potting parties?
A: To produce bonsai to sell at Kusamura's annual bonsai show. The show is very expensive to put on, more than $1,500. We have to have the plant sale to pay the bills. Every club member is urged to attend at least one potting party.

Q: What do we do at a potting party?
A: (1) Style and repot Club-supplied trees. The Club supplies everything but your good ideas, labor, and tools.

(2) Beginners may also work on their donation trees. Experienced club members will be on hand to help. A potting party is like a workshop, except it's free.

Q: What's this about donation trees?
A: Each club member donates a minimum of three styled trees (bonsai) to be sold at the plant sale. The Club supplies free plastic bonsai pots for donation trees. Those members who can't donate trees pay $15.00 for each missing tree. We will have the plastic pots available for distribution at our next meeting.

Members may also style and pot their three required donation plants at the parties. Everyone please plan to attend at least one potting party. Mark the dates on your calendars.

February 25. Golden State Bonsai Collection-North Mammoth Bazaar X Lakeside Garden Center, 666 Bellevue Avenue, Oakland. Hours 10AM-5PM. Demonstrations Tim Kong and Bill Castellone AM, Ruben Guzman and Bob Gould PM. Kathy Shaner critiques. Benefit drawings. Large vendors' area. For general information call 916-419-7619. For consignment information call 510-523-0954.

April 21-22. The 42nd Annual Kusamura Show will be held at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto as in past years. Members should be choosing and grooming the bonsai that they will display. Young bonsai may be shown in the "in progress" room so everyone should be able to display at least one tree.
