FEBRUARY MEETING

7:00 Important Sale of Bonsai

Our long-time member Tom Refvem has decided it's time to turn his attention to other things and is selling his collection of approximately 100 bonsai, some in bonsai pots, others in training boxes. He offers these trees for purchase by Kusamura members. Tom and the Plantings have priced the trees, which will be sold on a first come, first served basis at the February meeting. The sale will begin at 7:00 p.m. sharp and last till 8:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity to acquire some nicely developed bonsai with sizeable trunks and age. Don't miss this sale.

8:00 p.m. Grafting Workshop

Due to illness, Tim Kong will be unable to tell us about urban collecting this month. Instead, in response to members' requests, Lonnie McCormick will give a lecture-demonstration on scion grafting, root grafting, and thread grafting. Afterwards, he will help members who wish to try grafting themselves. Preferably, workshop participants should bring all their own materials. Plant material for scion grafting is a two- or three-year-old seedling (for the understock) and a snippet of last year's growth containing several dormant buds of a different cultivar of the same species (for the scion). You will also need a sharp grafting knife, single edge razor or Exacto knife, grafting tape or raffia, and sealants.

Lonnie will bring a few scions of ume and Sandy a few plum seedlings for understock for use by those who have no materials of their own. Trident maples are good candidates for root grafting. A seedling can be used to improve the rootage of a bigger plant that lacks a root in a desired place. For thread grafting, you will need a developed tree (maples are often used) with a long whip of last year's growth that can be made to reach a spot on the trunk where a new branch is needed.

Dues Reminder

Dues are due ($20 per person, $30 per couple) and payable to our treasurer at the meeting.

Plant Sale
The plant sale is our primary source of money to pay expenses associated with our annual bonsai show, including the rent for the Mitchell Park facility in Palo Alto where the show is held. There seems to be some confusion about members' responsibilities for providing plants for the plant sale. Here's clarification.

Donation Trees. Every member is required to donate a minimum of three bonsai for the plant sale each year. These can be plants from your own collection or plants that you buy from nurseries and then style as bonsai. Each bonsai you donate should be nice enough to sell for at least $15. Members who are unable to contribute bonsai for sale can fulfill their obligation to the club by contributing $15 for each missing tree (or $45 for all three).

Potting Parties. We have three potting parties each year. (The two remaining dates for this year are February 10 and March 10.) Members who need help styling and repotting their trees can receive it from our experienced members at the potting parties. In addition to the donated trees, the club will acquire other plants. It will be the responsibility of all members to style and repot them at the potting parties. Everyone can use plastic bonsai pots that the club will supply free for all plant sale trees. The pots will be available at the February meeting and at the potting parties. Even if you are new to bonsai or the club, you are urged to attend the potting parties to see how bonsai are made. It's fun! It's a learning experience! It's a chance for everyone to get better acquainted with other members. Please come!
