NEXT MEETING -- February 14, 2003

7:00p.m. Meeting

Bonsai are forever works in progress. For example, nature produces changes every year to which we must respond by wiring, pruning, and repotting. However, sometimes a vision comes to us that requires more radical changes that, it is hoped, will transform an ordinary bonsai into something truly special. Such a vision came to Sandy Planting in the night. To realize it, she needs to transfer an established group planting onto a rock. Everyone will enjoy watching Sandy work her magic. Perhaps we can learn to adopt her attitude as well and be on the lookout for ways to radically improve our own bonsai.

8:00p.m. Meeting

The subject is Elm Basics, and Bill Scott is our expert presenter. Bill has been working with elms for over 20 years. They are one of his specialties, and he has mastered their propagation, styling, and maintenance. Bill often exhibits his trees, and they are always greatly admired. To illustrate his methods, Bill will bring a number of elm bonsai to the meeting--some large, others small; some single trees, and others group plantings; some grown from seeds, others from cuttings. Bill will demonstrate how to prune branch tips for future shape control as well as repotting. If you have questions about elms, Bill's the one to answer them.

Monthly Workshop Opportunities
For Kusamura Members Only

Once you've completed the beginners' series of bonsai workshops, what's next? Kusamura offers its members a great opportunity to continue refining their skills in a series of limited-enrollment, more advanced workshops. For the most part, each workshop meets once a month. Because space is limited, participants must apply in advance for a place. Information on how to apply will be supplied at the club meeting.

The following workshop dates and times have been scheduled for January:

Kathy Shaner

  • Monday, February 3rd (7:30).

Sandy Planting

  • Saturday, February 8th (1:00)
  • Saturday, February 15th (1:00)
  • Thursday, February 20th (7:30)
  • Thursday, February 27rd (7:30)

Workshop Sign-ups
There are still a few places available in the second Saturday afternoon class and in both of the Thursday evening workshops.
