Last Potting Party on
Sunday, February 12!

This is our last potting party for our 2012 show and we have some wonderful trees to work on thanks to two very generous donations from Jane Iki and Bill Scott. With a total of thirty-seven new arrivals, everyone is sure to find something fun to work on. You won't want to miss it.

As in the past, the potting party runs from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Planting's home - 898 Coleman Ave in Menlo Park. Along with working on club owned trees, members can bring trees they are donating toward the sale and use club soil, wire, and pots to improve them if necessary.

Members attending the potting party may purchase any bonsai worked on
that day.

Meetings, News and Special Events

February 17, 2012
A Four Corners Event

7-9:30PM
I know everyone will agree that Jerry Carpenter did a terrific job critiquing
our trees at the January meeting. With so few trees getting a "pass" for our show in April, we realize that maybe we should do this more often and further out for next year's show.

To keep the focus on our April show, the February program is dedicated to creating accent plants and prepping club-owned trees for our 2012 or 2013 shows. These show-quality trees are being cared for by various members of the club. We will have four things going on simultaneously. In two  corners of the room we will have members working to refine a black pine and Colorado spruce. In the third corner a number of dawn redwoods will be used to create a group planting. In the fourth corner members will have the option to create an accent plant to be used with their bonsai in the show.
Accent pots and material will be available. Members creating an accent plant can purchase the accent plant for a small fee. Otherwise, the accent plants created will be included in the club raffle that night.

The Colorado spruce and dawn redwoods are from the collection of Jim Ransohoff and the black pine is from the collection of Tosh Saburomaru.

Setup begins at 6:30PM for those who can arrive early and help out.

CLUB NEWS

Dues Are Past Due!
It’s the beginning of the year and club membership dues should be paid by
January 30th. Dues are $35 for a single membership and $45 for a family
membership.

Give your check or cash to club treasurer Suresh 'Mo' Mohan at one of our
upcoming January events or mail him a check to 100 Whitney Ave, Los Gatos, CA 95030. Checks should be made payable to Kusamura Bonsai Club. We hope everyone chooses to renew their membership for what will be an exciting year for Kusamura.

Kusamura Takes on the Mammoth Bazaar Cafe
This year Kusamura will be coordinating the Mammoth Cafe at the GSBF's annual fundraiser on February 25–26. This is a great opportunity for Kusamura to thank GSBF for their many years of support.

Please contact Rita Curbow to sign up for one of the following tasks:
Friday, February 24—Join Rita for a Costco shopping trip to purchase food for salads, sandwiches, cookies, chips, etc.
Saturday February 25—morning shift from 9:00AM–12 noon (make salads, sandwiches, soups, coffee, etc., open the cafe)
Saturday February 25—afternoon shift from 12:00 noon—3PM (serve lunch from cafe window, assemble food items, end of day cleanup)
Sunday, February 26—morning shift from 9:00AM–12 noon (make salads, sandwiches, etc., open the cafe)
Sunday, February 26—afternoon shift from 12:00 noon–3PM (serve lunch from cafe window, assemble food items, end of day cleanup)
Off-site Preparation—We also need people to prepare items ahead of the event to sell such as a crock-pot of chili, homemade cookies, a cake, etc.

Note, we will not have access to a microwave and ask that all items that must be served warm can be served from a crock-pot or kept warm on a stove or hot plate. Volunteers who prepare items for this event will be reimbursed for their expenses unless they choose to donate it instead.

The morning and afternoon shifts are divided into three-hour increments to make it more convenient for people to volunteer and attend the bazaar. We need three volunteers for each shift. The cafe will be open to serve lunch starting at 11:30AM each day and
finishing up around 2:30PM.

2012 Annual Show
April 20–22 at the Lucie Stern Community Center in Palo Alto This year the show committee is asking members to prepare three trees for display. The committee, which consists of Donna Farmer, Charlene
Fischer, Mark O’Brien, Helen Reist, and Rita Curbow, will be meeting later in January to work on details for the show. Mark has already taken on the publicity. The committee welcomes any input from club members at large.

Our 2012 show will be a very special show because on Saturday April 21 the club will be paying tribute to John and Sandy Planting for their 50-plus years of commitment to Kusamura and the bonsai community. This event, starting at 5PM in our show demo room, will include a video slide presentation along with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. If you have a picture or article about John or Sandy that could be used in the slide presentation, please contact Rita. Show fliers and fliers announcing this special event during our show will be made available soon.
The committee is happy to announce that Tim Kong will be our guest demonstrator on Saturday, April 21.

Library News
The club is still looking for a new librarian or co-librarian. Refer to the August newsletter for details or contact Rita.

A catalog of the library is now available on the club website for your referral.

Beginner Bonsai Classes & New Members
The January workshops brought two new members into the club, David Muir and Gale Lane. The club welcomes David and Gale as our newest members.Along with Laurel Dent, they learned a lot by styling two trees, making bonsai soil using the club recipe, and repotting. They will have a followup
workshop in early April to get some final critiques of their trees before our annual show.

The club would like to thank Jerry Carpenter for doing such a fantastic job of putting this class together and offering his services free of charge. All fees paid for the class went directly to the club.
