January Meeting

Friday, January 12th, 2001 at 7pm

Oaks

That's the topic for our meeting this month. We will have a real expert on hand to teach us what we need to know about the trees that are such an integral part of the California landscape. John Thompson is a member of Midori Bonsai Club. He writes an excellent monthly column on all bonsai subjects for their newsletter. Oaks are a specialty of his. He is known far and near for his sensitivity to the shapes oak trees take in nature and for his ability to duplicate these shapes in bonsai. He has been a speaker at Kusamura as well as at many other clubs. People who hear him are always delighted with his well-prepared programs, which are full of helpful information on caring for oaks, and include a demonstration, too.

Start the year off right! Learn the newest on oaks, a plant readily available from your own garden -- Thank you, squirrels! -- or from native plant nurseries.

Show and Tell

One of the nicest features of our meetings is our display table of trees and plants at their seasonal best. This month's theme could be winter silhouettes or flowering ume. Please bring something nice from your collection.

January Work Schedule
From A Year of Bonsai Tips by Jim Ransohoff

Calendar

January 6. Kusamura is sponsoring a workshop with Bill Valavanis on January 6, 2001. Details

January 6 & 7. Bay Island Bonsai Club. Centennial Hall, 22292 Foothill Blvd, Hayward. Admission $3.00. Exhibit, auction. Both days 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information: www.bonsaiboon.com, or call Boon at 510-865-1008.

January 14, February 11, and March 11. Kusamura will hold three Potting Parties in preparation for our annual show. Meet at the Planting's house. Time: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or until all plants have been transformed into bonsai. Plan to stay a few hours of your choice.

"What's a potting party?" you may ask you are new to Kusamura. It's an enjoyable work session where members get together to style and pot plants for the sale that will be held in conjunction with our annual bonsai show. The club supplies the plants, wire, soil, and plastic bonsai pots. Participants supply the labor and imagination. Advanced bonsai artists are available to provide guidance to those who desire it. Beginners gain knowledge through practice in a supportive atmosphere. Everyone's help is needed. The sale of the plants pays for a large share of the show's expenses; rent for the facility and all the rest. If we don't have plants to sell, we're in trouble!

Members may also style and pot their three required donation plants at the parties. Everyone please plan to attend at least one potting party. Mark the dates on your calendars.

February 3 & 4. Bay Area Bonsai Associates (BABA). Lakeside Park Garden Center, 666 Bellevue Avenue, Lake Merritt, Oakland. Saturday 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; demo by Kathy Shaner 7:30 p.m. Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; demo by Bob Hilvers 1:00 p.m.
