July Meeting

Workshop

The meeting from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. will be a workshop. Now's your chance to put to work all that you learned from Sandy at the last meeting about pruning coniferous evergreen trees. Move from the theoretical to the practical! Sandy and John Planting will be on hand to help you prune and style one or, time permitting, two of your pines or junipers. Don't miss this hands-on opportunity to improve your bonsai collection and have a good time doing it, too.

What to bring: (1) your tree(s), (2) tools and wire, and (3) something to protect the tables (plastic or cardboard). There will be no repotting, but you can bring pots that you are considering to use for Sandy to critique.

Note: From now on we will meet in the Fellowship Room at the church instead of in the Main Hall. The most convenient parking is off Embarcadero Road behind the church.

Calendar

August 26th: There will be no meeting at the church on the second Friday. Instead we will have a bus trip on Sunday, August 26th

The bus will visit (1) Sumagawa's Nursery, (2) Sumagawa's Growing Grounds, (3) Redwood Empire Show. The bus will leave the Plantings' home in Menlo Park promptly at 8:00 a.m., and will return at about 6:00 p.m. The cost of the bus is $30.00 per person. Spouses or friends may buy tickets. Pay in advance at the July meeting by cash or check (see our treasurer, Rita Curbow). Bring a lunch including plenty of liquid. No water will be available at the growing grounds.
Bring a hat&emdash;it will be hot.

You may be asking, "Why should I go on this trip? This is a rare opportunity to shop for almost anything connected with bonsai. The Sumagawa Nursery has lots of interesting plants. The growing grounds is a place to hunt for specimens of many common and unusual species. Some have been in cans for years and have girth, curves, and interesting features not available in the stock of most nurseries. Furthermore, you can only visit the growing grounds as a member of a group, not on your own.

The Redwood Empire Show is a very large one. You will see many very fine trees displayed tokonoma style. There will be many vendors there selling plants, pots, tools, wire, and everything else bonsai people desire. Redwood Empire members also sell big plants on consignment. There will also be a demonstration by Mas Imazumi. To see some photos of trees on exhibit last year, click here.

Why take the bus? It's a very pleasant, hassle-free, air-conditioned ride. You can visit with friends and enjoy the scenery. The baggage compartment is huge, and can accommodate big trees and lots of them. Those that have taken the bus ride before will attest that it is worth every cent of the fare.
