SPECIAL NOTE

Because of a scheduling conflict we'll meet one week later than usual -- Fri, June 18.

NEXT MEETING -- June 18, 2003

7:00p.m. Meeting

Because of a scheduling conflict we cannot hold our monthly meeting at the First Congregational Church on our usual second Friday of the month. So instead of meeting Fri, June 11 we'll meet one week later -- Fri, June 18.

7:00p.m. Meeting

Those who purchased trees at the club show are encouraged to bring their new trees to this session for advice. If we do not have enough new trees, Sandy Planting will demonstrate Shohin Pines.

8:00-10p.m. Meeting

Sandy Planting will give a demonstration on Shohin plants. I have learned more of this part of the tiny arts from her than anyone else. She always has something new.

From The President

The May business meeting is election of officers and board members for the 2004-2005 year, followed by installation of officers at the June meeting. Pauline Wood is chair of the nominating committee (and actually may be doing it on her own as I forgot to ask at the April meeting for two members at large to serve with her). When last I spoke with her, she was still looking for a replacement for me. Kusamura Presidents have usually served a second one-year term (max is two terms in succession). However, while willing to serve as president again in the future, I need to concentrate on other things next year. Also, as I'm starting to sell my jewelry at more fairs, many of which occur on the second weekend of the month, I would not be able to attend many meetings. And that's hardly fair to the vice-president much less the membership at large. I'll still be on the board as past president and will participate in club doings as often as I can.

On that note, think what you can do for the club. You don't have to wait to be asked to hold office or run the raffle, serve as refreshment chair, librarian, etc. We should all be thinking of taking some of the load off Sandy Planting who has graciously done both the Technique's program and many of the 8:00 programs for many years. Think of a program you could do or a workshop that several of you could collaborate on. And thank you, Sandy, for all you have done in the past and are continuing to do!

As for the show, as Sandy Vrooman said, we've asked all committee heads to write up procedures, list how-to's for assembly of backdrops, the large tokonoma, shed storage, and anything that they think could be improved for future shows. We also welcome comments or suggestions from any of you. Anything that we can do now to prep for next year's show will make things run that much smoother when the time comes.

And thanks to EVERYONE who participated in the show or all your hard work.

Stephanie

From The Show Chairman

The Kusamura 44th Annual Bonsai Show went well. As usual there was a bit of chaos, that was totally forgotten when the doors opened at noon and the trees did their magic, giving a sense of serenity to the room. I donÕt know how those trees pull it off year after year, but they do. The displays set up by individual members and groups gave the show a nice variety. We got a lot of positive comments on the quality of the show.

We sold most of the trees made by the club and most of the consignment trees. The break down was 55% club trees and 45% consignment. We only got 20% of the consignment sales, but there was no cost to the club or more effort than the act of managing the sales. I took a lot of the remaining sale trees home. My shelves are falling apart. If you have some room and are willing to help out, let me know. I will deliver them to you.

We did better at signage, but we still need some improvements for next year. I would recommend that signage be considered as important a job as kitchen, sales, or hospitality. I would recommend that a signage chair be appointed as soon as possible There were a lot of tired hard working people packing up on Sunday night, but we got everything folded up for another year.

There are a few folks that know a lot in our clubÉwe need a few more. With this knowledge base spread out more, the work load will not be so great on the shoulders of a few.

We need back up for the storage, lists of what is in storage and more folks who know how to get the stuff. We need more folks trained on putting up the partitions. There were some broken this year. We had 20 backdrop frames and only 18 covers. Someone is repairing the two missing covers. If you have them, please let the new show chairman know.

Various groups involved in the show are trying to write instructions on how the various show jobs are structured.

This is my last message a show chairman and first as your new Newsletter editor: I have agreed to take on the newsletter to see if I can do it. I would like some guest editors to contribute or volunteer to be in charge of a feature.

Thanks,
Sandy Vrooman
