Our 41st Annual Show

Our annual show is scheduled for April 21 and 22 at Mitchell Park Community Center in Palo Alto with Kathy Shaner and . More Details.

March Meeting

Root over Rock &
Bunjin Pine with Jim Gremel

7:00

Sandy Planting will demonstrate the very interesting root over rock style, whereby a tree is attached to a rock and then its roots are covered with soil. After a year or two the roots are gradually exposed revealing the tree clasping the rock. Time permitting, Sandy will tell us how to choose and arrange rocks for saikei. She is our president, but is also a renowned expert on the use of rocks in bonsai.

8:00

Jim Gremel will be back, this time to demonstrate bunjin style using a pine tree. (There will be a drawing for the demonstration piece.) Jim has given Kusamura several excellent programs in recent years. He is an artist potter who makes bonsai pots as a sideline. He also raises nursery plants and anneals copper wire. (Yes, he will have pots and wire for sale at the meeting.) Jim is a meticulous worker with a true artist's eye who explains everything he is doing and offers lots of information and tips along the way.

Show and Tell

You shouldn't have trouble finding something beautiful in your yard to display at the meeting this month. It's especially nice to see the tiny fresh leaves expanding while the trunk and branch structure is still visible.

In Memoriam

Long-term members will be saddened to hear that Joe Clepp has passed away. He was the club Historian for many years, also president, and a great friend to bonsai and us all. Our sympathy goes out to Bess.

Calendar

March 11. This is your last chance to help the club prepare trees for the plant sale. Everyone learns from attending a potting party, and the camaraderie developed adds to the fun. Pots, wire, and plants are provided by the club. One can have as much help from the experts as desired. There is pleasure in creating art from a tangle of roots and branches and knowing that you are helping the club at the same time. Don't let this last opportunity for the year go by. Be one of those that the club thanks profusely for making our annual shows possible!

And while we're thanking people profusely, did you know that Lonnie McCormick has built shelves in our storage shed and reorganized everything inside? This is just the latest of the many projects that he has undertaken on behalf of the club. How about thanking Lonnie by signing up as a docent for the GSBF Collection-North? See him at the meeting.

April 21-22. The 42nd Annual Kusamura Show will be held at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto as in past years. Members should be choosing and grooming the bonsai that they will display. Young bonsai may be shown in the "in progress" room so everyone should be able to display at least one tree.
