May Meeting
Back To The
Basics with Sandy Planting
& Shohin or Saikei with Ted Matson
7:00
Sandy Planting
will discuss how and when to prune many types of
trees to maintain or improve their shapes. If you
purchased a tree at this year's show this talk with
help you care for your tree.
8:00
Ted Matson, from
Southern California, will be back. Many of you will
remember the great demonstration and talk that Ted
gave us on clump style bonsai when he was here last
year. He is an excellent artist and speaker, and
always gives us lots of tips on how to create and
improve our bonsai. This time, he will be doing a
shohin (trees under ten inches tall) group
planting, or saikei (planting with stones).
News From Our
Annual Show
Kudos
for all who put on our beautiful 2001 Kusamura
Bonsai Show! President Sandy Planting felt that it
was one of our best ever. She especially
appreciated the many tokonoma style exhibits and
the open spacing of the show. She thanks all the
many members who worked especially hard to make the
show the great success it was. Everyone will be
glad to know that we made all our expenses and more
from the plant sale, donations, and raffle tickets.
Your donations of three trees made this
possible.
Sandy said that
she accidentally ended up taking home several
stands that belong to others. She will bring these
to the May meeting to return to their owners. (It
might be a good idea for all of us to look through
our show accessories before putting them away, just
in case we, too, have some items that are not
ours.)
Looking forward
to next year's show, Sandy hopes that everyone will
begin to acquire stands, scrolls, and companion
plants to use with their own trees. We can't expect
to always have just a few members bring all the
accessory items for everyone else to borrow.
Besides, having our own accessories makes it
possible to display our trees beautifully at homes
or in the workplace. It's sometimes hard to find
stands and scrolls, but keep looking. They can be
assembled a few at a time from a variety of sources
including the Mammoth Bazaar, GSBF convention
vendors, stores in San Francisco's and San Jose's
Japan Towns, or other places that feature Oriental
objects or flower arranging supplies. We have a
whole year to search if we start now.
A Generous
Gift
Dr.
Fritz Howard has given Kusamura the remainder of
his stands, books, and pots. The pots have already
been sold. The other items will be sold later in
the year to benefit the club. We thank Dr. Howard
very, very much. He and Mrs. Howard have moved to
Marin County. We will miss them greatly but wish
them happiness in their new home.
