Jim, Pauline, and Duncan have been studying the new azalea techniques developed by Tatemori Gondo and taught at El Dorado Bonsai in Placerville. Upon completion of three-year course, students are eligible to take an instructor's course and exam to become certified instructors capable of teaching others these new techniques.
Bring in your azaleas and find out what work is necessary on your particular plant. Also bring your tools and aluminum wire.

It is interesting that on the East Coast some of our normal garden shrubbery is considered to be tropical like pomegranate, olive, and grewia.
With the world getting smaller due to the speed of travel and now the Internet, bonsai is no longer strictly a Japanese art form. In fact, JAL has a competition annually for the best 100 bonsai trees outside of Japan. Sheldon Savage is the proud owner of one of the 50 best in this competition for 2004 and that was the tree featured in our Tokonoma.
There are people living in climates where they cannot grow pines or deciduous trees. So the plants they choose are local to their climate. Other folks live in apartments and want to enjoy bonsai, so they are limited to tropical plants featured for indoor use.
We will discuss the care and development of bougainvillea, schefflera, and ficus as bonsai. We will also do a coffee tree bonsai demonstration.
