7:00p.m. - 10p.m. Meeting
We are offering
something a little different from usual this year
in the hope that you will enjoy an opportunity to
style one (or possibly two if they are small) of
your three required donation bonsai for the
Kusamura club plant sale next spring. This month's
meeting will be devoted to pruning and wiring with
the help of some of our most experienced and
talented members. Not only will you benefit from
what amounts to a free workshop and reduce a little
of the work during the spring rush season, but a
number of plants that you style now (such as
junipers) will have time to put on some new growth.
By show time, they will attract more buyers and
better prices for our treasury. As you know it's
getting more and more costly to put on our show and
bring you great speakers during the year. A good
plant sale is a necessity.
Besides your
donation trees, you may also bring to the workshop
any club trees that you have been babysitting since
the April sale or before.
Along with your
tree(s), please bring to the November meeting your
tools and wire and a cardboard or heavy plastic
table cover. Y'all come now!
PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
Sorry so many of you weren't able to attend Lonnie
McCormick's tool sharpening program/workshop
meeting last month. It was such a good way to learn
how to properly sharpen your tools. Unfortunately,
a number of people left before the hands-on portion
of the workshop, and didn't benefit from having
Lonnie watch and correct their technique. Lucky
Dave Curbow will attest to the fact that there are
added benefits to staying until the end of the
program. He was the winner of the gift certificate
for a three-hour tool-sharpening workshop Lonnie
graciously donated.
Thanks to Dennis
Abler, Ed Poggensee, Lonnie McCormick, and Nancy
and Jerry Eaton for making up the Collection North
work party with me last month. We dug and potted up
black mondo grass for sale at the Mammoth Bazaar,
dug and replanted variegated grass around the dry
stream bed, and weeded Tosh's Walk and many of the
bonsai trees. We got a lot done in three hours.
Next time I'd like to have a bigger group of
volunteers. It was fun!
And speaking of
volunteering, the club needs a Christmas Party
Chair or Co-Chairs to order the ham, bake the
turkey breast or roll, purchase whatever is needed
in the way of tableware, and make centerpieces.
That's our most immediate need.
Think about what
you can do to help our club keep running smoothly.
We need to get cracking on organizing the annual
show for April 2004. Sandy Vrooman has volunteered
to be a Show Chair, but would like a co-chair to
work with her and learn the ropes. We also need
Committee Heads for: Plant Sale/Plant Purchase,
Kitchen, Publicity, and In-Progress Display. Am I
forgetting something equally important?
And speaking of
the plant sale, whoever volunteers for the job
should probably take in the Sei Boku Green Elephant
Sale at their meeting on November 26th in the hope
of finding some good material for our potting
parties or for yourself for that matter. See me for
the particulars.
Also speaking of
plant sales, we will have three potting parties as
usual this year. They have two purposes: 1) to
style club-purchased trees and 2) to help club
members style any of their donation trees. It would
be wonderful if every member could attend all three
of the potting parties, but please try to attend at
least one. You really should attend two if you plan
to work on your donation trees at one party so that
you can contribute to the styling of the
club-purchased trees at another. We really need to
style as many extra trees (above and beyond the
club member donations) as we can at these potting
parties. The more trees we have to sell the better.
Please mark your calendars now for January 11th,
February 8th and March 14th so that you won't have
other commitments when the time comes.
