OCTOBER MEETING

Kathy Shaner will be our speaker/demonstrator for the entire meeting, 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Everyone knows Kathy as an inspiring teacher and great communicator, knowledgeable and skillful as a result of her natural talent and many years of study both in the United States and in Japan. We all learn a lot when Kathy comes to town!

Kathy's topics for the meeting will be special aspects of growing pine and juniper bonsai:

(1) How to graft pines. Kathy will explain the principles in detail and tell us how to prepare our trees for grafting. Though now is not the time to do the actual grafting, rest assured that after the meeting we will be able to approach the work with confidence when the proper time comes around.

(2) Proper care for pines in the fall season.

(3) How to treat junipers other than shimpaku. As a part of her presentation Kathy will restyle a Procumbens Juniper, which will be raffled at the end of the evening.

HARUNOBU TOKITA WORKSHOP

Here is a great opportunity to work with a master from Japan. Mr. Tokita was Mr. Mitsuya's second apprentice while Kathy Shaner was his third. He will be giving bonsai lessons all day on Saturday, October 20th. The students, who should be well versed in the basics, will bring their own trees to work on. They can register for the whole day or for half a day: 9:00 a.m. to noon or 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please contact John Planting for the price and other information. Those who have seen Mr. Tokita's work, as the club did at last year's October meeting, know how very creative, skillful, and thoughtful he is.

PICNIC AT LAKE MERRITT

There will be a free picnic only for GSBF Collection North docents and for those who are considering becoming docents on Sunday, October 21st at the GSBF Collection-North bonsai garden in Oakland's Lakeside Park, 666 Belleview Drive. For those who would be willing to be docents but have some concerns about working in Oakland, here's an opportunity to see the layout and peaceful surroundings of the garden and to visit with people who already serve as docents. If you plan to attend the picnic, please contact Lonnie McCormick by October 10th to ensure that there will be enough food for everyone.
