NEXT MEETING -- October 11, 2002

7:00 p.m. Juniper Hands-on Workshop

At last month's meeting, you saw Mr. Tokita, Kathy Shaner, and their associates style three junipers as bunjin. ( The object of bunjin styling is to bring out the best that a tree has to offer free of adherence to rules that govern styles such as formal upright, informal upright and all the rest.) Now it's your turn to follow their lead. Just about everyone has a juniper plant laid by and still un-styled. (If not, you can obtain one from a nursery.) Following Mr. Tokita's methods, you will locate the best front, find the most interesting line, prune and wire your tree, and be ready to repot it when you take it home. Maybe it will become a favorite; maybe you can use it as one of your donations to the plant sale coming up next April. During the workshop you will have access to suggestions and/or guidance from our club's experts.

At the beginning of the meeting, a few words will be said about the types of junipers that are available, their characteristics and requirements. Then it's to work! Besides your juniper, you will need to bring your tools, wire, and a large plastic bag or shallow cardboard box to protect the table tops while you work. This meeting should be challenging but enjoyable for all, regardless of the level of expertise they have attained so far.
