SPECIAL MEETING --
October 8, 2004

7:00-10p.m. Demonstration by Yasuo Mitsuya and Kathy Shaner.

Due to this exciting presentation, we will not have a beginners program this month.

Kathy Shaner, became the first non-Japanese citizen and the first woman to be awarded a certificate of Bonsai Master (sensei) by the Nihon Bonsai Kyodo Kumiai. Kathy received one of only three certificates awarded that year.n. Mr. Matsuya is her instructor. These are life long positions of master and student as you will see when they work together.

This exciting program will be a demonstration of the techniques Mr. Mitsuya has perfected over years of practice. His perspective on how to style a tree brings out the best in any possible situation. One of the trees in my collection that will be one of my best was styled in a class that he offered last year

This is a rare opportunity to see a true master at work. Kathy Shaner will be assisting and doing a running translation/commentary.

At the end of this evening, there will be a benefit drawing and some luck person will get to take the demo tree home.

Upcoming Events

November will be another special event -- a demo by Yousuke Omizo (Yasuo Mitsuya's last apprentice after Kathy) There will also be a Friday afternoon workshop for 6 or 8 people at the Plantings with Yousuke Omizo.

December will be our annual Christmas party and pot luck. Volunteers are needed to help produce this event. We need someone to make sure we have our traditional ham and perhaps a turkey. Also need someone to be in charge of table displays. Please check in with our Vice President and program coordination Sandy Planting

A PEP TALK by your Editor

Kusamura is an old bonsai club with a long history of serving the bonsai community with interesting programs and shows. As time goes by many of the members who used to put in tremendous amounts of work have retired from the club in one way or another.

The group of active volunteers seems to get smaller and smaller. I have jumped back in after a hiatus of several years, and I have some guilt at having been away so long. It is nice to be home.

I suggest you think of how you can get more involved in your club. It's no fun to try to "strong arm" members into taking jobs. I know this from being show chairman last year. My wish is that we will have some volunteers this year well in advance of the show.

I want to thank all those who helped make our show a success last year. This year I want to thank in advance, Bang for taking charge of signage for the show, and Duncan for agreeing to be sale plant chair.

I would like volunteers for publicity, kitchen, hospitality, in progress room, set up, break down, and education.

Thanks in advance.
Sandy Vrooman

Trees of Huangshan, China

The trees of Huangshan, China are famous for their beauty. You'll notice that many of the trees growing naturally on the mountainsides look like bonsai -- perhaps they were the original inspiration for bonsai styling.

One of our club members recently visited Huangshan and took some photos to share.
