Yasuo Mitsuya, a Master of
Gendai (contemporary style form of Bonsai training) in Japan, is an
internationally renown bonsai master who has been teacher to many
students in California and other states such as Kenji Miyata, Kathy
Shaner, Dennis Makishima, Cheryl Manning, Boon, David DeGroot, and
Gordon Deeg. In Japan, he is known as the "Bonsai Doctor". After a
year and a half absence he returns to California.
The presence of both Yasuo Mitsuya and Kathy Shaner sharing their
knowledge and artistic skills as well as practical and specialized
techniques of bonsai and bonsai related topics is an opportunity you
should not miss.

Tree Critique, What the heck do you see in that tree, Part II

Master work on trees from the Garden reserve area, including
many shohin specimens, as he talks about their styling
opportunities. Each participant will be able to talk about
future design possibilities in a Collection tree.
This format has always been a big hit (starting at the El
Dorado seminar).

will discuss the styling and seasonal work to be done on many of
the deciduous trees in the Garden.
This will include Liquid Amber, Zelkova, Maples,
Flowering Quince, Seiju Elms and other elms, etc.
Bring your questions.

Tips and Tidbits (groups, special/difficult trees)

|
$100 unlimited slots – within reason 9AM-5PM – The focus will
be on tropical and Shohin trees.
Tropicals will include Ficus, Bougainvillea, Olive and
Guava. We will
discuss all shohin trees.
If you have difficulties with a particular species (does
not have to be tropical or shohin) we would like to know.

General Procedures
Naming of the Trees
Our huge pomegranate and
new large hornbeam need names.
We’ll have a box available throughout the event for people to
submit their ideas. If we
pick your suggestion, you will see your name in the Collection
Connection. By the way… Do
you receive it?*
Lunch
BGLM will supply sandwich
lunches for $15 (no special requests).
You may also bring your own lunch or grab a lunch at one of the
local eateries during lunch break.
If you want us to supply lunch, you must have your request in to
us two weeks before the workshop/seminar.
Parking
Entrance fee into the
park at Lake Merritt is $10 weekdays and $5 on weekends.
General Procedures
Question session at the end of each day. For workshops and Old
Growth Trees seminar, bring your own clean, well functioning,
disinfected tools. Disinfect
with hydrogen peroxide, Hexol or alcohol, etc.
For workshops, bring own wire.
We prefer mature trees in a bonsai pot; no raw material unless
cleared by Kathy or Gordon.
Coffee, tea, sodas and water provided.
Cancellations
Cancellations with
refunds must be made two weeks in advance.
